A Tense Situation in Waldport Ended Peacefully Sunday Evening

At around 4:50 PM yesterday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suicidal male at a residence in Waldport. A suicide prevention hotline caller reported hearing gunshots during their conversation with the man. Deputies arrived and safely evacuated two juveniles and an adult from the home, as well as neighbors. The Tactical Response and Crisis Negotiation Teams were called in, and after negotiations, 43-year-old Timothy Swander surrendered without incident. Swander was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Recklessly Endangering. No injuries were reported.

Wine and Chowder

The final day of the Florence Chamber’s Wine, Chowder and Glass Float Trail sales were brisk despite the rain.  Chamber officials reported steady sales throughout the rainy Sunday as locals and tourists sampled wine and Chowder.  Driftwood Shores was crowned this year’s champion chowder by visitors.  The wine tasting was expanded to two days this year to give participants the opportunity to visit all the wineries represented.

Holiday Closure

The city of Florence offices will be closed today in observance of Presidents day.  All other essential city workers will be working. There are two meetings scheduled for later this week.  The Public Arts Committee will meet on Wednesday and the city council will have a work session on Thursday.

Weather

The National weather service has issued a beach warning for today along the central Oregon coast with the potential for sneaker waves.  Waves are expected to be significantly closer than normal and it is dangerous to be on or near rocks and jettys.  Weather is expected to improve by early evening, but storm watchers should be careful and keep themselves, children and pets a save distance from the surf.
