Head of School Resigns

The Whitmore Classical Academy had a setback on Friday.  Siuslaw Valley Charter School Board President released a letter announcing the resignation of their Head of Schools, Arturo Ruelas.  Ruelas was hired late last year to lead the school under high praise from the board.  King said in a letter to the media that despite the setback the board is committed to fulfilling their mission to offer a high-quality option for the students of the greater Florence area.  King also said they will be providing updates in the coming weeks.

Search for Child Continues

Authorities are continuing search efforts for Dane Paulsen, who has been missing since March 1st. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, along with partner agencies, is conducting daily water searches using specialized equipment, including sonar and underwater drones. Several Florence individuals have also assisted in the search, joining community members searching along the lower Siletz River. While no evidence of criminal activity has been found, officials urge anyone with information to call the tip line at 541-265-0669. Updates can be found on the Sheriff’s Office FlashAlert and Facebook page.

Mapleton Water

The Mapleton Water District Board of Commissioners will meet Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the Mapleton Lions Club Kitchen. The district has been grappling with aging and faulty equipment for over three years, and the agenda includes discussions on critical infrastructure projects, including raw water source improvements and a new plant update. Commissioners will also review grant funding options and consider purchasing essential system components. The meeting is open to the public, and officials encourage community participation as they work to address long-standing water system concerns.

Planning Commission

The Florence Planning Commission will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall to discuss a proposed zoning amendment for eight properties on Bay Street west of the Siuslaw River Bridge. The request, submitted by Chris Leturno on behalf of A & D Bay Street, seeks changes to the Old Town District Area A zoning, specifically allowing various residential uses where the Shoreland Residential Overlay applies. The commission will review past zoning decisions, land use policies, and coastal regulations before making a recommendation to the City Council. A final decision will require a second public hearing with the council.
