Weather Issues
Homes in the Tiernan area awoke without power this morning after a night of blustery winds and rain. One other outage was reported by Central Lincoln PUD in an area north of Waldport. There have been no major reports of damage on the roadways. The utility company also reported outages in North Bend, but those were restored last night just before midnight. The national weather service continues to predict strong winds for today, says tomorrow winds should be reduced to around 5 miles per hour during the day. Rainfall is also expected to ease off throughout the day today.
Non-Profit at Risk of Shutting Down
A local nonprofit that has served the Florence area for more than three decades is facing an uncertain future. Memory Care Respite of Florence, which supports individuals living with dementia and provides relief for their caregivers, may be forced to close if it cannot fill several vacant board positions. According to the organization, recent life changes among its board members have left key roles unfilled, placing the group’s operations at risk. Memory Care Respite operates the Coffee Club adult day program and has been part of the community for 31 years.
Hoyle Backs Democrats for Hegseth Resignation
Representative Val Hoyle of Oregon’s 4th District joined 69 House Democrats today in calling for the immediate resignation of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The demand follows a report from The Atlantic revealing Hegseth shared classified military information via Signal, an unsecured messaging app. The letter—also addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz—cites serious breaches involving sensitive U.S. military operations. Lawmakers say the lapse could have endangered American lives.
Beach Clean-up
Company’s coming! That was the battle cry in 1986 for the first Oregon Great Spring Beach Cleanup. A fall beach cleanup had been organized beginning in 1984, but organizers saw an opportunity for a family-friendly activity that would work to help clear a winter’s worth of storm debris in time for the summer tourist season. In the nearly four decades since, the cleanup has extended to locations all over Oregon and encompasses the ethos surrounding Earth Day. Instead of a single day, the Oregon Spring Cleanup 2025 will take place over ten days from April 12 to the 22nd, with most events and activities taking place on Saturday and Sunday, April 19th and 20th. Several groups routinely host activities at different locations in our area, and so far, there are just a handful slated for Western Lane and Douglas Counties. You can create your own event and invite others to join you. Or you can sign up to help out at one that’s already scheduled.
