First Citizen and Future First Citizen Nominees
The Florence First Citizen Committee has announced a special banquet to honor individuals who exemplify outstanding community service. This year’s Florence First Citizen nominees are Carol Bennett and Steve Skidmore, recognized for their dedication to enhancing local quality of life. Future First Citizen nominees—high school seniors who model civic involvement—include Claire, Lindell Macali Lade, Kamorah Lake, Macy McNeill, Storm Engel, and Addison McNeill. One student will receive a $2,500 Marteen Wick Scholarship. Formerly part of the Siuslaw Awards, the celebration highlights those who have selflessly contributed to the Florence area. The event takes place April 29th from noon to 1 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. Doors open at 11:30. Tickets are $25 and include lunch and dessert.
SOS to Move Golf Date
It’s been a challenging week for area non-profit fundraisers. First, Florence Food Share announced that they were rescheduling their “Game On” fundraiser, originally set for April 11th. Now, Siuslaw Outreach Services has had to postpone its annual golf tournament, the Siuslaw Open. It had been scheduled for early May, but SOS Director Bob Teter said they must reschedule due to the lack of available carts that day at Florence Golf Links. Teter said they are looking at the calendar with the golf links and hope to get it rescheduled sometime in June. He said anyone who had already entered will be notified of the new date.
Help for Disaster Victims
While Florence residents haven’t been directly impacted, the Oregon Department of Emergency Management is asking those willing to help support victims of devastating flooding in Harney County. Financial gifts are the most effective way to assist—donate at redcross.org/cascades or visit orvoad.org for a list of trusted organizations. Unsolicited donations of food and clothing can slow relief efforts. Volunteers are encouraged to wait for the recovery phase.
Dunes Day Event
Peace Harbor Medical Center’s Trauma Program and Western Lane Fire & EMS Authority invite the public to the second annual Dunes Day event on May 24, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Goose Pasture ATV area near South Jetty. This free event aims to prevent traumatic injuries during Memorial Day weekend by offering Stop the Bleed training, raffles for off-road safety gear and bleeding control kits, and opportunities to meet local trauma, EMS, and law enforcement teams. Attendees can also enjoy free snacks. The event is part of ongoing efforts by Peace Harbor Medical Center, and Western Lane Fire & EMS Authority to enhance community safety and preparedness.
