Drug Trafficking Arrest in Florence; Plane Slides Off Runway; Real ID Deadline Approaches

Drug Trafficking Arrest in Florence

In December 2024, Florence Police launched an investigation into two packages shipped through the U.S. Postal Service containing large quantities of a controlled substance. The parcels were sent from Florence to Portland and then returned. Working with the Portland Police Bureau Narcotics Team, Homeland Security, and USPS, authorities identified a suspect in Florence. On April 3rd, a federal search warrant was served at an apartment in Shore Pines on Highway 101. Investigators found significant amounts of drugs and evidence of national and international trafficking. Thirty-three-year-old Skyler Dean Daniels of Florence was arrested by Homeland Security and taken to Portland for federal custody.

Plane Slides Off Runway

A small private jet skidded off the runway and into Coos Bay early Monday morning, prompting an emergency response at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. Officials say the 2019 Honda HA-420, inbound from St. George, Utah, overshot the east end of Runway 05/23 around 6:12 a.m. and came to rest in about five feet of water, roughly 100 feet from the runway. All four passengers and the pilot were rescued from the water and taken to Bay Area Hospital with minor injuries. Three have been released, one remains hospitalized in Coos Bay, and another was transferred. The jet was lifted from the bay by crane around 10 a.m., allowing the airport’s main runway to reopen. Commercial flights resumed shortly after, with only minor delays.

Real ID Deadline Approaches

The Transportation Security Administration and Oregon DMV are reminding travelers that beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. air travelers aged 18 and older must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another TSA-accepted form of identification to board commercial flights. In Oregon, a REAL ID has a star in the upper right corner. Without it—or another acceptable ID like a passport or military ID—passengers may face delays at TSA checkpoints. REAL IDs cannot be obtained online; they must be applied for in person. Officials say now is the time to check your ID and avoid travel disruptions.
