Westlake Woman Arrested in Stabbing

Lane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a stabbing on April 8th around 9 p.m. at a residence in the 6500 block of Canary Road, south of Florence. Due to limited staffing and distance, deputies arrived approximately 40 minutes after the call. They found one individual with facial cuts and a leg puncture wound. After investigation, 58-year-old Carrie Jean Hogan of Westlake was arrested for second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. She is currently lodged at the Lane County Jail.

Crash Survivors Released From Medical Care

All five people aboard the HondaJet that skidded off the runway at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport Monday morning have been released from medical care. The jet came to rest in shallow water in the Coos Bay Estuary. FAA investigators were on site Tuesday, with the NTSB continuing its probe into the cause of the incident. The airport resumed commercial service shortly after the crash, and the aircraft was removed later that day. The jet had been arriving from Utah when it overshot Runway 05/23 just after 6 a.m. Monday.

Tournament Rescheduled

A major fundraiser for Siuslaw Outreach Services, the Siuslaw Open Golf Tournament, has been rescheduled.  It had originally been set for May 10th at Florence Golf Links.  Bob Teter, the executive director of SOS announced this week they are now on track to tee off Saturday, July 19th.  The event is a very important source of revenue, especially this year says Teter.

“About 70% of our funding comes from grants, and about two-thirds of those grants are grants from both county and state.”

With the ultimate source of that money coming from the federal government, Teter has some concerns.

“With what’s going on in Washington DC we’re told to expect as much as a 50% cut in funding, so those unrestricted dollars are going to be more critical than ever.”

A few teams had already registered for the 25-team scramble, but there are still plenty of openings.  You can register at Florence Golf Links, SOS, or online at tournevents slash siuslaw open.

Gas Prices on the Rise

Gas prices in Florence have jumped to an average of $3.70 per gallon, up nearly 20 cents in the past two weeks. That’s despite a drop in crude oil prices, now hovering around $60 a barrel. Oregon’s statewide average has also increased, reaching just over $4. Industry experts point to seasonal refinery maintenance and the switch to more expensive summer-blend gasoline as key factors. Ongoing refinery issues in California are also putting pressure on West Coast prices.
