Viking Baseball finds first Far West win

The Viking bats came alive Tuesday. Siuslaw put up 10 hits in an 8-7 Far West League victory on the baseball diamond over the Douglas Trojans.  Joel Sissell picked up the win on the mound and helped himself at the plate with a bases-loaded, 3 RBI Double.  At one point, Siuslaw was up 8-1, but the Trojans consistently chipped away at the lead, putting up six more before the Vikings stopped them in the 7th.  The two teams will meet again on Friday in Winston for a doubleheader.

 Viking Softball

On the Softball Diamond, the Lady Vikings lost to the Trojans 17-1. They, too, will wrap up the three-game series with two in Winston on Friday.

College Baseball:

The Oregon State Beavers moved up three spots from six to number 3 in the NCAA Top-25.  Since then, the Beavs have extended their win streak to 12 with a pair of wins over Gonzaga, edging the Bulldogs 4-3 Monday evening, then wrapping up the two-game mini-series yesterday afternoon 8-3.

In Eugene, the Portland Pilots scored 6 runs late in the game, coming from behind for a 10-9 victory over the Ducks at PK Park.  The Ducks had moved up three spots in the rankings from 16 to 13 on Sunday, mostly on the strength of a series win over UCLA.  Oregon will host Oregon State for a three-game series beginning Friday evening.

Johnson named Athlete of the Week:

Viking multi-sport athlete Will Johnson is this week’s Athlete of the Week.  He was the headliner for the Vikings at last week’s John Oliver track and field invitational in Independence, winning the long jump with a personal record and the longest leap in the 3A ranks this year:  21 feet, 11.25 inches.  He also claimed 3rd in the triple jump with another PR and the second longest mark in 3A this year at 43 ft, 4.5 inches; pole vaulted 12 feet for fifth in that event; then ran the first leg of the 3rd place 4X100 relay team.

Honorable Mention is given to Danin Lacouture. She won the shot put with a PR and the fourth longest throw this year in the 3A, 36 feet, two inches.
