Tire Slashing at Fred Meyer

Florence Police responded to a report of vandalism Thursday morning, May 1, at the Fred Meyer parking lot. Officers arrived around 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a white male actively slashing vehicle tires with two knives. The suspect, identified as Samuel Benjamin Rice of Florence, was located nearby still armed and was taken into custody without incident. Police say more than 10 vehicles had tires slashed, with at least one sustaining additional damage. Rice faces charges of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, Disorderly Conduct, and Criminal Trespass. He has been transported to Lane County Adult Corrections. Anyone whose vehicle was damaged and has not yet been contacted is urged to call Florence Police at 541-997-3515.

Sheriff Announces Retirement

Lane County Sheriff Cliff Harrold has announced his retirement, effective May 16th, after 35 years of service. Harrold, who began as a cadet and rose through nearly every division of the Sheriff’s Office, was appointed Sheriff in 2019 and elected in 2020 and 2024. In a public letter, Harrold said it was time to step back and reflect on the future with his family. District Attorney Chris Parosa praised Harrold’s leadership, citing his role in modernizing the jail and strengthening community safety. Chief Deputy Carl Wilkerson will serve as interim Sheriff until the Board of Commissioners determines a process for appointing a successor, with discussions expected to begin May 6th.

Rhody Days

The 118th Rhododendron Festival returns to Florence, Oregon, May 15th through 18th, celebrating “Rhodies on the River” with floral beauty, family fun, and festive tradition. Events kick off with the coronation of Queen Rhododendra and the King of the Coast on May 10th. The Davis Shows carnival opens May 15, with live music, vendor fairs, classic cars, arts, and the popular Rhody Run. A free shuttle from Three Rivers Casino helps visitors get around. The Grand Floral Parade through Historic Old Town wraps it all up on Sunday, May 18th at noon.

Parking

As thousands descend on Florence for the 118th Rhododendron Festival, parking is expected to be tight—especially near Bay Street and Old Town. Festival organizers say public parking at 1150 Bay Street and the south lot of the Florence Events Center will be available, offering free, short-walk access to the heart of the action. On-street parking may still be an option in some areas, though sections of Bay Street will be closed for events. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid delays getting to the festivities.

Youth Police Academy

The Florence Police Department is accepting applications for its 2025 Youth Police Academy, set for June 23rd through 28th. Open to students ages 13 to 18, the academy offers hands-on training in police procedures, criminal investigations, first aid, and more. Participants will also observe demonstrations from SWAT, the Coast Guard, Bomb Squad, and other agencies across Lane County. Applications are due by Friday, May 23rd at 4 PM. The $75 fee includes meals, supplies, and uniforms, with scholarships available. Space is limited.

Another Scam Alert

The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce is warning members about scam emails offering to sell Chamber member information. Officials say these messages are fraudulent and not from the Chamber. If it doesn’t come from bettina@florencechamber.com, it’s not legitimate. Members are urged not to click links and to report suspicious messages.
