Viking Honors
The Siuslaw Vikings were well-represented on the All-League Baseball teams this season, landing five players with league honors. Catcher Jacob Mann earned First Team All-League recognition, while infielder Max Reynolds also made First Team — his third straight year receiving the honor. Joel Sissel was named Second Team All-League Utility, with Coleman Weidman earning Second Team Outfielder. Michael Fitzsimmons received Honorable Mention as an infielder. With two freshmen among the honorees, coaches say the future looks bright for Siuslaw baseball.
Day One – Track and Field
The Siuslaw Vikings made a powerful statement on day one of the 3A Special District 1 track and field championships Thursday at Hans Petersen Field. The Viking boys lead the district by 51 points, while the girls hold a 25-point advantage heading into Friday’s finals. Five boys and three girls have already punched their tickets to next week’s state championships. Junior Will Johnson topped the pole vault and took second in the long jump, while Kale Jensen won the long jump and now ranks No. 7 all-time at Siuslaw. Justin Allen and Johnson both hit school top-10 marks in the pole vault, with Allen now No. 9. Clayton Wilson took first in the 3,000 meters, and freshman Henry Stone followed in second. On the girls’ side, Alison Hughes won the 3,000, Danin Lacouture claimed the shot put title, and Aidell Cadet finished second in the high jump, entering the school record books at No. 10. District action wraps up Friday from 11 to 4 at Hans Petersen Field. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students. Tickets are available at the gate
Ducks Win
Three Oregon pitchers combined on a four-hitter Thursday as the No. 4 Ducks defeated Michigan State 4-2 in their Big Ten Tournament opener at Charles Schwab Stadium. Ian Umlandt allowed just one earned run over six and two-thirds innings, while Santiago Garcia and Seth Mattox closed it out with three perfect innings. Anson Aroz led the offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run double in the first and a key RBI single in the seventh. The win is Oregon’s 11th straight, matching its longest streak of the season. A win against Nebraska today will put them in the conference semifinals.
