Ems Out Hit Hops; Duck Honors; Whitney Earns Another Honor

Ems Out Hit Hops

The Eugene Emeralds powered past the Hillsboro Hops 7-2 to open their series, improving to 7-2 in the second half. Drew Cavanaugh crushed a 3-run homer—his third in as many games—and Zane Zielinski added another 3-run blast to seal it. Starter Josh Bostick worked five strong innings, and Tyler Vogel struck out three straight to escape a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. Eugene has now hit 17 homers in their last seven games—their hottest stretch of the season.

Duck Honors

Oregon running back Makhi Hughes and defensive back Dillon Thieneman have been named to the 2025 Walter Camp preseason All-America second team. Both are incoming transfers—Hughes from Tulane, where he rushed for over 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, and Thieneman from Purdue, where he led the team in tackles two straight years. The Walter Camp team is the oldest college football All-America list in the nation. Oregon kicks off its season August 30 at home against Montana State.

Whitney Earns Another Honor

Oregon State pitcher Dax Whitney has earned his fourth Freshman All-America honor of 2025, this time from D1Baseball.com, which named him to its first team. Whitney also received first-team nods from Baseball America and Perfect Game, and second team from the NCBWA. The right-hander from Blackfoot, Idaho finished the season 6-3 with a 3.40 ERA and 120 strikeouts—eighth-most in OSU single-season history. He capped his year with dominant postseason performances, including 12 strikeouts vs. TCU and 10 against Florida State.
