Happy 4th
As Oregonians prepare for a festive Fourth of July weekend, state agencies are urging residents to celebrate responsibly. The Oregon Health Authority, ODOT, OLCC, and others warn that driving or boating under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or medications can be deadly. Impairment is a top factor in crashes and drownings, especially during summer. Officials encourage planning ahead, choosing sober drivers, and being mindful of how substances impact judgment and coordination. Safety, they say, starts with smart choices—for yourself and your community.
Backflow Testing
The City of Florence is reminding residents about the importance of backflow prevention in keeping drinking water clean and safe. Backflow happens when water flows in reverse—from a private system back into the public supply—potentially carrying contaminants like fertilizers or chemicals. To prevent this, state law requires annual testing of backflow prevention devices. The City tests and maintains most residential devices, but those with private irrigation systems must arrange their own certified testing and report the results. If you received a letter and no longer have an irrigation system, contact the City to update your records.
Block Party
The City of Florence has announced the return of the Community Block Party, set for Friday, July 18, 2025, from 5 to 10 p.m. on Bay Street between Laurel and the Siuslaw River Bridge. This free, family-friendly event features live music from “5 Guys Named Moe,” sponsored by Three Rivers Casino Resort. Attendees can enjoy games, activities, and tasty treats while gathering with friends and neighbors for a summer evening celebration in Old Town Florence.
