Black and White Recycling

The City of Florence is holding its annual Black and White Recycling Event on Saturday, August 16th, offering residents a centralized drop-off for hard-to-dispose-of household items. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Siuslaw Middle School south parking lot. City residents can bring items like tires, propane tanks, appliances, mattresses, paint, and more. Some limitations apply, including a five-item limit for tires and size restrictions on tanks and appliances. After 1 p.m., access may expand to the greater Florence area if funding allows. The event is organized by the Environmental Management Advisory Committee, with support from local organizations including St. Vincent de Paul, Habitat for Humanity, and Florence Lions Club.

Pedestrian Enforcement Operation

It’s still a few weeks away, but the Florence Police Department has announced a Pedestrian Enforcement Operation scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Spruce and 12th Street. The focus is on crosswalk safety, reminding drivers that both marked and unmarked crosswalks require full stops for pedestrians. Passing a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk is illegal in Oregon. The department says slowing down and giving space can save lives — especially with fatality rates rising sharply at higher speeds. The operation will be canceled if it rains.

National Night Out

The City of Florence will participate in the annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5th, with events scheduled at Miller Park beginning at 6 p.m. Hosted by the Florence Police Department and local emergency services, the evening is designed to strengthen community ties and promote public safety awareness. Attendees can expect food, games, and activities for all ages. City staff and volunteers will be on hand to serve meals. Pets are not permitted at the event.

Lumber Sales

The Bureau of Land Management reports selling nearly 48 million board feet of timber in western Oregon last month, generating over $13.4 million in revenue. The sales spanned 1,673 acres and are expected to supply enough wood to build approximately 3,000 homes. BLM officials say the sales will support jobs and local mills, with contracts awarded to timber companies in Drain, Springfield, Salem, Eugene, and Roseburg. The agency manages 2.4 million acres in western Oregon, emphasizing economic growth and forest stewardship.
