Short Term Rental Open House

The City of Florence is inviting the public to an open house on short-term rentals. The event will cover how STRs fit into the city’s housing goals, current regulations, and proposed updates to city code. City staff will be on hand to answer questions and collect feedback. The open house takes place Monday, October 13th at Florence City Hall. Doors open at 5:30 with a presentation at 5:45. More details and survey results can be found online at ci.florence.or.us/planning/short-term-rental-housing-resources.

Feedback on FEMA Plans

FEMA is seeking public comment on proposed changes to the National Flood Insurance Program, including how the Endangered Species Act will be integrated into floodplain management. The comment period is open until October 6th, with details available on the City of Florence Planning Department’s website under FEMA resources. Meanwhile, Florence City Council has continued its public hearing on updates to the city’s existing floodplain management code to November 17th. That hearing will review local compliance with FEMA’s new rules and mapping standards.

New Help for Orcas

Oregon’s endangered southern resident orcas are getting new protections. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved three Endangered Species Management Plans aimed at reducing threats to the small population of whales, which feed almost exclusively on endangered Chinook salmon. Conservation groups say pollution, declining food supply, and underwater noise are major factors in the species’ decline. The most recent count found just 73 orcas remain. Advocates say the next step is for lawmakers to fund and implement the plans to help ensure the survival of these iconic whales.
