City Council Meeting Information

The Florence City Council meets this evening at 5:30 at City Hall and online, with a public hearing on Ordinance 12, Series 2025 — a proposal to vacate an unimproved public alley as part of the Elm Park Planned Unit Development near 9th Street. The request, initiated by the City, would allow the area to be incorporated into the Elm Park housing project, eliminating city maintenance for the unused right-of-way. The Planning Commission previously recommended approval, finding the change serves the public interest by supporting affordable housing development. Council will review the ordinance, which is expected to continue for final action later this month.

Also on tonight’s 5:30 City Council agenda — consideration of a request from the Florence Emergency Cold Weather Shelter to operate a warming center this winter when freezing or hazardous weather threatens lives. Councilors will also review an engineering contract for sewer improvements at Harbor Vista Park and Parkside Drive, and a grant application to update zoning and transportation plans for the 9th Street area. The meeting will include proclamations for Arts and Humanities Month and National Friends of the Library Week, and will stream live on Channel 191 and at ci.florence.or.us.

Senior Firearm Suicide Numbers High

A new analysis from The Trace shows adults 70 and older have the highest rate of firearm suicide in the U.S., with more than 63,000 deaths recorded from 2009 to 2023. Oregon ranks among the states with the highest rates — nearly 1,400 deaths during that period. Data journalist Aaron Mendelson says the trend is tied to an aging population, isolation, and limited mental health care, particularly in rural areas. He says programs like Oregon’s Gun Shop Project and Donna’s Law can help reduce risk — but awareness and conversation are key. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988.
