SNAP Benefits Affect 18%

The U-S Department of Agriculture says it lacks the funding and legal authority to continue SNAP benefits past October 31st without a federal budget resolution. But a coalition of 225 Oregon community organizations says that isn’t true. David Wieland, with Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, says the U-S-D-A has 5 to 6 billion dollars in contingency funds that would cover the cost of SNAP benefits nationally for most of November.

“USDA has a congressionally authorized contingency fund that they won’t commit to sending out to folks. Hunger should not be a bargaining chip in this shutdown process.”

About 760-thousand Oregon residents, or 18-percent of the state’s population, receive SNAP benefits. Wieland adds SNAP is not only important for the people who need it to buy food – the program also benefits local grocery stores where SNAP dollars are spent. A 2020 study found SNAP supported nearly 200-thousand jobs in the independent grocery industry.

Chamber Seeking Business Feedback

The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking input from local businesses on how recent demonstrations may have affected day-to-day operations. Chamber officials say the goal is to accurately represent the community’s experience and provide informed feedback to local leaders and decision-makers. Businesses are encouraged to complete a short, confidential survey, whether or not they’re Chamber members. Responses will help guide efforts to maintain a safe and thriving business environment in Florence.

A special “Less Scary Hour” is offered from 5 to 6 each evening. Organizers say visitors can expect new sets and effects this year, along with food vendors and a themed boutique in the lobby. Tickets range from twelve to eighteen dollars, with discounts for groups of four.
