Pounding
The Annual Pounding for the Florence Food Share is coming up this Saturday and organizer Cindy Wobbe says the need is critical for families in our region. Food insecurity is one of the heaviest burdens for families and costs have just continued to rise over the years, often time out pacing the benefits provided many. Luckily Snap benefits have been restored, however the need continues to grow. Along with that Wobbe says Food Share would benefit greatly from members of the community.
“food share is in need of volunteers to step up right not and process the donations and assisting with the great need that they have.”
She also says that this year there are two benefactors who have promised to match the donations dollar for pound. Those donations will greatly impact the ability to provide food for all of the struggling families according to Wobbe. She says any help, large or small will help.
“with the pounding, if we all do a little we can make an enormous impact.”
The Pounding will be from 10 until 2 this Saturday at the Grocery Outlet store. It will once again be a drive through event where you can just pull in and drop off your donations, or you can shop at Grocery Outlet. Coast Radio will be broadcasting from 9:30 until Noon.
Whale Euthanized
A young humpback whale that stranded on the beach near Yachats over the weekend was euthanized late yesterday afternoon. The whale, estimated to be three years old or younger and about 30 feet long, had been stuck on the shoreline since Saturday. Marine mammal experts believe it became entangled in crab-fishing gear and lost its ability to navigate. According to the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network, crews first sedated the whale before administering a heart injection using a long specialized needle. Officials used an environmentally safe substance, since the remains will likely stay on or be buried at the beach. Attempts on Sunday to reposition the whale so it could swim free at high tide were unsuccessful, despite fluids and care provided overnight. Marine scientists called the outcome heartbreaking, noting that live strandings of large whales on the Oregon Coast are rare.
Hotelier Moves Forward
Matt Braun of Braun Hospitality will appear on the December edition of Our Town to discuss the upcoming construction of the Wyndham Microtel planned for the property across from the Florence Events Center. City officials say the final steps in the property transfer are now complete, and a groundbreaking date has been set, with details to be released later this week. City Manager Erin Reynolds says the project marks the culmination of years spent searching for the right developer. Braun is expected to provide an update on the hotel plan and the projected timeline for completion.
