Athlete of the Week

The Sports Club and Coast Radio Sports congratulate junior Mapleton basketball player Lucie Burruss as this week’s athlete of the Week.  Last week Lucie had 29 points and 9 rebounds on Thursday against Eddyville. That effort on the heals of Tuesday’s game against McKenzie where she put up 38 points, 8 steals and 5 rebounds.

Honorable mention goes to another Sailor, Abbi Galvin Mendez who had a strong showing last week including a double-double against Eddyville scoring 12 and getting 11 boards.

3A Football

The Siuslaw Vikings will compete in a five-school special district for football next season under final recommendations from the OSAA Ad Hoc Football Committee. Siuslaw will be grouped with Brookings-Harbor, Coquille, Douglas, and Sutherlin, while Mapleton moves to a 1A six-player league and Reedsport to a 1A eight-player league. The committee also reduced 3A football from 37 schools to 30 and cut playoff berths from 16 to 14. Siuslaw Athletic Director Max Perry says plans are already in motion and continuity with rivalries remains a priority as details are finalized. The OSAA Executive Board is scheduled to vote on the proposal next week.

Basketball

Siuslaw Viking boys and girls basketball will be on the road tonight at South Umpqua. The games were originally scheduled to air on KCST, but due to scheduling conflicts, they will not be broadcast. Also on the schedule, the Mapleton Sailors will host Alsea this evening.
