Task Force Aimed at Food Insecurities
An Oregon task force has released a plan aimed at pushing back against recent federal cuts to food assistance programs. More than 300,000 Oregonians have lost or seen reductions in SNAP benefits since the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” last July. Jessica Morris, a member of the Oregon Hunger Task Force steering committee, said the state is not prepared to fully absorb gaps left by federal food programs. She said the goal is to create a more resilient food network so no Oregonian goes hungry, regardless of changes in federal policy. The task force is calling for a one-time funding boost for food banks and pantries, legislation to reduce barriers to food assistance, and free school meals for all students. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 1 in 6 Oregon children experience food insecurity. Locally, Florence Food Share serves roughly 700 families each year.
Vendors Needed for Job Fair
Siuslaw High School is still seeking local businesses and organizations to participate in its upcoming Student Career Fair. The free event will be held Friday, March 20th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school gym and is designed to connect students with job, career, and volunteer opportunities. Organizers say teachers are preparing students to engage with vendors and learn about future work and career paths. More than 350 students attended the last fair, with dozens of vendors representing fields such as healthcare, trades, tourism, public service, and education. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in reserving a free table can contact Siuslaw School District Human Resources.
Casino Offering Donation Site
Three Rivers Casino Resort has launched a new charitable giving option that allows guests to donate spare change from redeemed gaming vouchers to local nonprofits. The casino has added the Everi Cares Giving Module to its gaming floor, letting guests donate the remaining cents from their vouchers at full-service kiosks. One hundred percent of each donation goes directly to the selected organization. Initial nonprofit partners include Florence Food Share and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County. Casino officials say the program makes it easy for guests to support the community while reducing unredeemed vouchers. Florence Food Share says the funding will help purchase essential food to support local families facing food insecurity.
