Increased DUII Enforcement
Florence Police will increase DUII enforcement from August 19th through September 7th as part of the nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign leading into Labor Day weekend. Officers will be conducting extra patrols throughout the holiday travel period, looking for impaired drivers in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives. Nationally, about 30 percent of all traffic fatalities involve an impaired driver. Police remind motorists that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Cannabis, prescription medications, and other substances can also make it illegal to drive. If you’re celebrating, plan ahead by choosing a sober driver, using a rideshare, or staying where you are. If you see a suspected impaired driver, safely call 911.
Siuslaw National Forest Seeking Input
The Siuslaw National Forest is asking for public input on proposed recreation fee increases at campgrounds and other recreation sites across Coos, Douglas, Lane, and Tillamook counties. The proposal includes changes at 19 campgrounds, along with holiday weekend fees at Sand Lake Recreation Area. Forest officials say the additional revenue would help pay for maintenance, repairs, staffing, and other improvements while keeping recreation sites sustainable for the future. Smoke Delays
If you’re traveling east on Interstate 84, be prepared for possible delays or closures due to wildfire activity. About 30 miles of active fire is burning at or near the freeway between Baker City and Ontario, and conditions can change quickly. There are currently no east-west alternate routes available, as sections of Highways 20 and 26 east of the Cascades also remain closed.
