City Council Meeting; Mapleton Accident Closes HWY 36; OSP Training

City Council Meeting

The Florence City Council will consider accepting nearly six acres of property for the Siuslaw Estuary Trail during its meeting this evening. The transfer would come at no purchase cost, but would require the city to maintain the trail for at least twenty years. Councilors will also consider annexation requests for three residential properties, changes to municipal court procedures, and an annual report from the Senior and Activities Center. The meeting begins at 5:30 at Florence City Hall, with virtual participation available.

Mapleton Accident Closes HWY 36

Highway 36 north of Mapleton was closed for nearly four hours Sunday following a crash near milepost four. The incident was reported shortly after 12:15 in the afternoon, prompting an extended closure while emergency crews responded. The Oregon Department of Transportation confirmed the highway has since reopened. No official details have been released regarding the circumstances of the crash or whether anyone was injured. Additional information is pending from authorities.

OSP Training

A large contingent of Oregon State Police vehicles gathered at the agency’s Florence office early this morning. More than twenty marked vehicles were observed shortly after four o’clock, filling the OSP parking area and spilling into an adjacent lot. Troopers at the scene said they were from outside the Florence area and had assembled for training, but offered no additional details. No public announcement regarding the training was located, and the nature and duration of the exercise remain unclear.
