CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) – The grandson of a woman who developed an
anti-racism program in Eugene was beaten, and family members say
the attacker used racial slurs. The Eugene Register-Guard reports
that the family of 16-year-old Jonah Fernandez posted pictures of
his bruised, cut and swollen face on the Internet. Fernandez is the
grandson of Bahati Ansari, who formed the Racism-Free Zone at her
middle school in the 1980s after her son objected to art depicting
a lynching that was posted on the wall in his classroom.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Seven weeks to the day after a crash in
southeast Bend killed a 16-year-old teen biking, a man has been
arrested on negligent homicide charges. KTVZ reports that Erik Conn
is jailed on $150,000 bail. Authorities say Conn was texting two
minutes before the crash. Witnesses told police Conn was speeding.
The teen – Forrest Cepeda – was pinned between Conn’s truck and a
rock after the crash.

WARRENTON, Ore. (AP) – Troopers say a north Oregon coast crash
between a Warrenton School District bus and a pickup truck injured
six students – one of them seriously – and the truck driver. A
16-year-old girl was transferred to a Portland hospital for
treatment of her injuries and five other students were taken to
area hospitals with minor injuries. A seventh student was
apparently unhurt. The 64-year-old pickup truck driver was also
transferred to a Portland hospital with serious injuries.

RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) – Two people from Oregon injured in a
single-engine plane crash in Wyoming remain hospitalized. Two other
people who were injured in the Labor Day crash – pilot Ronney
Bowker and Mary Ann Thenell – have been released but Thenell is now
in a nearby rehabilitation hospital. Authorities say Bowker’s wife
is in stable condition and Thenell’s husband has been upgraded to
serious condition at a hospital in Loveland, Colo. Their Cessna
Turbo crashed while making a stop in Saratoga on the way home to
Eugene.
