Tuesday night marked the first meeting of the new year for both the City Council and  new Florence City Manager, Jacqui Betz.  After her oath of office the council set their goals for the coming year.  2012 will see the completion of a city project twelve years in the making, The Siuslaw Interpretive Center…

200  “That’s a tangible result that people can see …and that is the old Barnett property that we acquired last year.

Culmination of the project actually begins in the construction process of the interpret center on the Siuslaw River front.  When completed the Siuslaw Interpretive center will offer a scenic wayside with interpretive signage on the history of the Siuslaw River Bridge and surrounding area; a tidal wetlands path; and a storm-water demonstration project.  Several other projects faced ranking for 2012 the goals list

201   “Public works has a lot of infra-structure projects that they’re still working on, with the sewer-lines – we also have the Urban Renewal District with their new sewer and water upgrades that will be happening this year.”

When he was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, Ron Wyden promised to hold Town Hall meetings in each of Oregon’s 36 counties every year.  He’ll open 2012 with meetings in three coastal counties next week.  Wyden will be at Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue on Sunday, January 8th at One PM.  Three hours later he’s scheduled to appear at Reedsport Community Charter School, then the next morning at Ten, Wyden will hold a Town Hall meeting at the Coos Bay Library.

What to do with that Christmas Tree…  Many people typically take them down in the week between Christmas and New Years.  Garbage haulers will pick them up, but they wind up in the landfill.  There is a group in Florence that will be glad to help you out…and you can help them out at the same time.  For a small donation the Siuslaw Valley Fire Fighters will pick up your tree this Saturday.  You simply need to call the fire station at 997-3212.

You still have a chance to get in your applications for the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce annual Siuslaw Awards!  The deadline to nominate was extended to the close of business, tomorrow Friday, January 6th. Applications are available on the Chamber website.
