PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 14-year-old La Center, Wash., boy who
collapsed during a middle school basketball practice has died in a
Portland hospital. Legacy Emanuel Medical Center last night
reported the death of Cody Sherrell. He had been hospitalized in
critical condition since his Jan. 3 collapse. The condition of
another boy who collapsed Friday at a youth basketball practice in
Salem is improving. OHSU Doernbecher Hospital said Isaac Arzate is
in good condition after being listed as critical through Sunday.

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) – A shooting at a convenience store in the
northeast Oregon town of Hermiston has killed one person. Police
tell The Tri-City Herald they couldn’t immediately identify the
victim in yesterday’s shooting at the Gotta Stop minimart. Multiple
gunshots were reported. Acting Police Chief Jason Edmiston says he
can’t confirm whether the shooting is gang-related.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A former director of Portland’s federal
halfway house has pleaded guilty to embezzling money from the
government-funded nonprofit. Federal prosecutors say Laura Marie
Edwards took $214,000. But at a hearing yesterday in federal court,
a government lawyer says Edwards maintains that she stole less than
that, a dispute that will be resolved at Edwards’ sentencing on
April 16. Edwards served as executive director of the Oregon
Halfway House from 2007 until 2010, when she was suspected of
stealing.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene paint company is paying a hefty
fine for a paperwork mistake with the EPA. Forrest Paint Co. told
the EPA it had its paperwork in order by June 2009, including a
plan that details how the company will detect and minimize leaks of
any dangerous substances. But in a consent agreement with the EPA,
Forrest Paint says it inadvertently checked the wrong box when
filing the form online, an error that cost the company $18,000.
