MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A jury in Medford has found a Jackson
County man guilty of manslaughter, but not murder, in the 1996
killing of a 15-year-old girl in the rural community of Ruch
(roosh). William Frank Simmons was 16 when Kaelin Glazier
disappeared, and was the last person known to see her alive. The
girl’s remains were not found until 2008, in a field about 80 yards
from the trailer where Simmons lived. Her head was wrapped in duct
tape and a cut on a rib indicated she may have been stabbed.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Beaverton man imprisoned in a vacuum
cleaner scam has been ordered to pay more than $6 million to a
bank, the people he defrauded and the Internal Revenue Service.
Johnny Brown was in prison when U.S. District Judge Garr King set
the restitution amount yesterday. Brown’s lawyer says his client is
sorry he bilked friends in a scheme intended to right his tanking
vacuum cleaner sales operation. Brown was sentenced to more than 10
years in federal prison last December.

BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) – A Canadian company has purchased the
Bonanza Mine in Baker County and plans to start exploratory work
this spring at the gold mine. Marathon Gold Corp. of Toronto bought
the Bonanza in December from Gazelle Land and Timber LLC of Canyon
City. Marathon says it paid $125,000 plus 300,000 shares in the
company. Gazelle will receive a 2 percent royalty on any gold
processed from the mine. Gazelle also retains timber rights on the
300-acre property for 20 years.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has approved Gov. John
Kitzhaber’s proposal to redesign Oregon’s health care system
beginning with the Oregon Health Plan. The vote came after
Democratic Sen. Betsy Johnson of Scappoose dropped her objection,
providing the 16th vote it needed to pass. Johnson had joined all
14 Senate Republicans in a pledge to block the measure unless it
included liability limits in medical malpractice cases. Kitzhaber
and Senate Democrats oppose that provision.
