MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – Neighbors tried but couldn’t rescue an
elderly man from his burning home Sunday in Milwaukie. Clackamas
Fire District 1 says firefighters weren’t able to find the man
right away. He was eventually found dead. Neighbors told
firefighters the man had lived in the home for nearly 70 years.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Officials say a man jumped in the
Willamette River to save a drowning man yesterday afternoon. KGW-TV
reports that a clothed man entered the water near the Hawthorne
Bridge in Portland and tried to swim to a public dock nearby but
started struggling. A witness stripped to his underwear, jumped in
and pulled the man to shore. The man had no pulse, so the witnesses
applied CPR until medics arrived to take over. He was taken to a
hospital in undisclosed condition.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 13-year-old boy found what
looked like a hand grenade in the basement ceiling rafters of the
family’s rental home in Milwaukie. The boy told his father
yesterday afternoon, and he placed it in the front yard and called
police. Police closed parts of two streets and told neighbors to
stay inside while Portland’s Explosive Disposal Unit removed the
device, which was described as a modified military training
grenade.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police are looking for whoever set fire to
a half-dozen trash bins in downtown Portland when an officer
spotted a suspect leaning into a garbage can. The 48-year-old man
is jailed on arson and reckless burning charges. He’s also
suspected of setting fire to a sign on a building under renovation.
