VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – Police reports show a Vancouver, Wash.,
man charged in connection with threatening letters containing white
powder that were sent to members of Congress fell under FBI
scrutiny after his wife told an officer that he laced the envelopes
with a mixture of celery salt and corn starch. The Oregonian
reports the FBI focused on Christopher Lee Carlson after a
Vancouver police officer told them about a March 4 interview she
had with Carlson’s wife about his recent emotional turmoil. On
March 9, a federal grand jury in Portland indicted Carlson on
charges that he mailed threatening letters to two lawmakers.

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) – Police say an Aloha mobile home owner is at
the center of an arson-for-hire conspiracy in which she agreed to
pay two people $3,000 each from an insurance settlement to set her
home on fire. Police say the pair ignited a phone book doused with
bug spray to spark the Feb. 18 blaze. Mobile home owner Roxanne
Hall was arrested last week. Also arrested were 19-year-old Justin
Indiveri and 20-year-old Hayley Wegman. A home next to Hall’s was
also damaged. No one was hurt.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Klamath County commissioners have
decided not to ask voters if they want to raise their property
taxes to pay for the jail. The Herald and News newspaper reports
that the board voted yesterday to remove a three-year jail levy
from the May 15 ballot. The reason is that the Legislature enacted
a bill this year allowing Klamath and other counties to use money
normally restricted to road maintenance to fund sheriff’s offices.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The widow of The Oregonian’s long-time
editorial page editor said her husband would have understood the
paper’s decision to publish a story about the fact that he had been
paying a 23-year-old woman for sex. Sixty-three-year-old Robert
Caldwell suffered a heart attack following a sex act with the
woman. He was pronounced dead Saturday at a Portland hospital. The
paper says Caldwell became unresponsive after the sex act at the
woman’s apartment, and she called 911.
