PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland School Superintendent Carole
Smith says the district needs to eliminate 110 teaching jobs and 38
administrative jobs and to close two small schools to balance the
budget for the coming year. She made the recommendations to the
school board yesterday as she proposed a $429 million budget, which
is about 2 percent less than the current budget.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – Clark County deputies made a grisly find
after someone reported seeing masses of flies inside the windows of
a van parked in front of a Vancouver-area apartment complex.
Deputies found the decomposed body of a man in the van. Randall
says it’s believed the man had been living in the vehicle. Officers
say they believe the van had been parked there for several weeks.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Springfield city councilors have
indicated their approval for a proposal to expand overnight parking
for the homeless. The Register-Guard reports councilors declared
themselves in favor of expanding the program to include singles and
couples and to allow the homeless to park overnight in industrial
areas, if property owners agree. Changes in the city code will be
drafted for a council vote.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – Police arrested a 33-year-old man last
night at a Beaverton library after two boys reported they saw him
masturbating under his coat while watching pornography on a library
computer. KGW reports police arrested the man on a disorderly
conduct charge.
