Baseball Falls on the Road

Viking pitcher Ryan Smith had an outstanding day on the mound… striking out 12, giving up only one earned run and three hits.  But, the Brookings-Harbor Bruins also capitalized on several breaks and three Siuslaw errors to come away with a 3-1 win in Curry County.

In other Far West baseball yesterday, South Umpqua shut out North Bend 3-nothing and Sutherlin got by Douglas 13-9.

Softball Wins on the Home Diamond

Siuslaw used nine hits, two walks and three sacrifice bunts for a 5-1 home victory over Brookings-Harbor.  Lona Dengler was two-for-two at the plate with an RBI, Breanna Knapp was two-for-three with a double and a single and one RBI.  Knapp also struck out three and gave up only five hits from the mound.

In other Far West action, Douglas edged Sutherlin one-nothing, North Bend fell to South Umpqua two-to-one.

On the track…

The Viking boys came away victorious in a five-way Far West League meet in North Bend yesterday.  Siuslaw put up 214 points for the team win… North Bend was in second with 160 points.  The order was reversed for the girls with the Lady Bulldogs coming away with 191 points and the win… Siuslaw had 134 points.

Hayden Schaffner won the 400 and the 800, plus took 2nd in the high jump; Brian Schofield won the 15-hundred and Mitchell Butler won the three-thousand.  Jacob Egan claimed the triple-jump and John Johnson went 13-feet, one inch to win the pole vault.  Jerrell Brown was second in two throws… going 42-feet, 11 inches in the shot put; and 113-feet, 2-inches in the discus.

Freshman runner Stevie Miller won the 400 meters in 1:03.1; Katy Potter won the 800 and the 15-hundred; Alex Dodson won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.3 seconds.  She also took second in the long jump and triple jump.
