TIGARD, Ore. (AP) – Police and fire officials say one person is dead after a fire at an apartment complex in the Portland suburb of Tigard. Fire crews were able to pull the unidentified victim out of the Hawthorne Villa Apartments late yesterday afternoon but the person did not survive. Tigard police and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews are investigating. Another person was treated for smoke inhalation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police have identified a man at the center of a murder-suicide investigation involving five family members as 27-year-old Nikolai Lazukin. An autopsy shows a gunshot to the head killed Lazukin, who was married with three children. A medical examiner said yesterday it was consistent with a self-inflicted wound, but neither police nor the deputy state medical examiner would officially call the death a suicide. Lazukin’s wife and children were found dead at a burned home in Salem.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police are trying to solve the mystery of two young children and an infant who were found abandoned in a shed. Police responded yesterday after a man reported hearing children’s voices coming from a shed behind his southeast Portland property. Officers found a boy and a girl, both believed to be under the age of 3, and an infant girl between eight and 15 months old. It’s not known whether the children are siblings. They have been taken into protective custody.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The DMV and most other state offices in Oregon will be closed for a four-day weekend. Today is an unpaid day off for state workers and Monday is Memorial Day. Essential services like prisons, police and the state hospital will remain open. Oregon University System workers will be on the job today. The Legislature required most state workers to take unpaid furlough days to help balance Oregon’s two-year budget.
