OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County deputies say the man who died after falling about 1,000 feet on Mount Hood was an “extremely experienced” mountaineer from Portland. They say 56-year-old Mark Cartier (Car-tee-AY) died early yesterday after falling from near the 10,000-foot level of the Cascade Mountain peak. He’d been climbing alone on a standard climbing route.

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) – Central Point police have arrested a 28-year-old science teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student. Crater High School teacher Sarah Louise Swanson-Suhrstedt was arrested yesterday on a charge of official misconduct. Police say the encounters between the teacher and the male student happened during the school year, but off campus.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – Police in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie say a car came crashing into a house last evening, passing within 20 feet of the spot where two residents were sitting. Officers say the 31-year-old woman driving the car had just picked up a pizza and was driving home with her 6-year-old son. The posted speed is 25 mph. Police say they cited the driver for excessive speed.

NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard says it has hoisted a man and his dog from a small island in Oregon’s Coos River after the man called for help. The unidentified man told the agency late yesterday that he got stranded on the island on Wednesday at low tide. He said he was hypoglycemic, out of food and unable to refloat his 16-foot boat at high tide. The man and his dog were both reported in good condition.
