PHOENIX (AP) – Ryan Roberts hit an inside-the-park home run, Justin Upton ended a long drought with a three-run shot and the Arizona Diamondbacks tied a franchise record with six homers in a wild 14-10 win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer, Aaron Hill connected for the third straight game, and Jason Kubel and John McDonald each had a solo shot to match a team record set twice before. Montero had four RBIs. Upton’s first homer since May 23 snapped a 5-all tie.

SEATTLE (AP) – Jacob Peterson scored on a deflected shot in the eighth minute for Sporting Kansas City, and Patrick Ianni’s electrifying volley goal just a few minutes later was enough for the Seattle Sounders to earn a draw 1-1 last night. Kansas City is unbeaten in its last four matches – two wins and two draws – and continues to inch toward the top of the MLS Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Sounders are slumping, winless in their last six league matches. They’ll play Portland on Sunday.

SEATTLE (AP) – Arena investor Chris Hansen has been questioned by the Seattle City Council about his proposal for a new arena that could lead to the return of the NBA. Hansen said yesterday he doesn’t believe his proposal should go to a public vote. When questioned about possibly renovating KeyArena, he said that was examined but proved to be too costly. A mayor’s spokesman says the office believes it’s a “mistake” to bypass Hansen’s proposal to spend time looking at KeyArena’s viability.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Allyson Felix will run in the 100 and 200 meter sprints at Olympic trials, giving herself a chance for two medals in London but forgoing the 400 meters, on which she had focused much of the past year. The combination should be less taxing on Felix, who tried the 200-400 double last year at world championships and finished second in the 400 and third in the 200. Qualifying for the women’s 100 at Olympic trials starts Friday in Eugene, Ore.
