SAN DIEGO (AP) – Edinson Volquez pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning and Alexi Amarista hit a two-run double as the San Diego Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 yesterday. Volquez was in command as he allowed just four singles in 6 2-3 innings and was not hurt by the control issues that have hampered him this season. Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth inning.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – The San Diego Padres have placed right-hander Anthony Bass on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Bass is 2-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 16 games, including 14 starts. The DL stint is retroactive to Thursday. San Diego also reinstated utilityman Andy Parrino from the 15-day DL before yesterday’s game against Seattle, which the Padres won.

SEATTLE (AP) – Ann Wauters had 14 points and seven rebounds to help the Seattle Storm beat the Washington Mystics 72-55 on Sunday for their fourth consecutive victory after a 1-7 start. Sue Bird added 14 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Storm. Crystal Langhorne led Washington (2-8) with 21 points. Matee Ajavon added 11, and Noelle Quinn had 10.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Kris Boyd scored his fifth goal of the season, David Horst converted a header and the Portland Timbers earned a much-needed 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders yesterday. Portland jumped ahead of Seattle early and held off the Sounders for its first win in the league series since joining the MLS. Portland went up in the 16th minute and later in the 25th.
