GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A one-year extension of federal timber subsidies paid to rural counties has survived conference committee negotiations between the House and the Senate. Rep. Peter DeFazio says the conference report on the transportation bill that contains the money was to be signed late last night. It’s expected to go before Congress for a vote sometime tomorrow.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s attorney general-to-be says she’s interested in reforming public record laws but is likely to take a less sweeping approach than the current attorney general. Ellen Rosenblum will be sworn in tomorrow to succeed John Kroger. Rosenblum says she wants to make government responses to requests for records “earlier, cheaper and better.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a former Roseburg man who shot himself in the neck during a traffic stop is in fair condition at a Portland hospital. The State Police said 59-year-old James Harvey Beaver was hit twice. Police stopped him Tuesday evening on Interstate 5 south of Portland. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday; his condition improved yesterday.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – State regulators have told the city of Corvallis the treated wastewater it returns to the Willamette River during the summer is too warm for endangered salmon and other fish. So the city is talking about a $14 million project to cool it. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that the City Council plans to spend some $700,000 to investigate the idea.
