PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A massive wildfire in southeast Oregon prompted the evacuation of a Transportation Department station and temporarily halted southbound traffic on U.S. Highway 95. A Federal Bureau of Land Management spokesman says lightning sparked the fast-growing Long Draw Fire south of Burns Junction. The fire has grown to 45,000 acres or 70 square miles.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – The Wasco County sheriff’s office says two people have drowned at White River Falls in north-central Oregon. Undersheriff Lane McGill says the victims apparently tried to walk behind the main falls to take a photograph yesterday afternoon and slipped into the pool at the base of the falls. The victims have so far been identified only as two males.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A disturbing note left in a mailbox led police in Beaverton to find a man and woman dead inside a home. Police say the deaths appear to be a double suicide. Officer Mike Rowe says a postal carrier who found the note yesterday called police. KATU-TV reports the note said “by the time you find this we both will be dead, somebody needs to take care of this.”

TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Corrections Department says two minimum-custody work crew inmates have been injured in a fall down a steep slope as they cleared vegetation in the Tillamook State Forest. A Coast Guard helicopter from Astoria hoisted the injured men yesterday from the steep hillside to a forest clearing near a road. The two men were taken to hospitals.
