MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Jackson County grand jury has indicted the mother of a 3-year-old Medford boy who fell off a building and into the arms of a neighbor. The Mail Tribune reports that 22-year-old Amelia Smart will be arraigned on the felony charge within two weeks. The boy fell July 1 after hanging onto a small lip around the edge of the roof where his family lived in an apartment.

LAKESIDE, Ore. (AP) – State police say a driver who refused to pull over for a traffic stop was killed in a five-vehicle crash on northbound U.S. 101 on the Oregon coast near Lakeside. The crash late yesterday afternoon closed the highway for about four hours. Police say the driver who refused to stop for a speed violation traveled about seven miles before the crash. Three other people were hurt.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The Josephine County jail has stopped holding burglary suspects in jail. Sheriff Gil Gilbertson tells the Grants Pass Daily Courier that suspected burglars are being cited and released due to budget cuts at the jail.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon secretary of state’s office says a proposal to ban the use of nontribal commercial gillnets in the Columbia River has qualified for the Nov. 6 state ballot. The Oregonian reports that supporters say the gillnets used by commercial fishermen are outdated and harm protected fish in the Columbia. Opponents say approval of the ballot measure would not help protected fish.
