PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police are investigating two early-morning armed robberies in northeast Portland, including one in which a man was stabbed. The first victim told police he was on foot when three suspects demanded his backpack, shoes and wallet. Within a minute, a second victim was on a bicycle was robbed of his cell phone and bike. One of the thieves stabbed the victim, leaving him with a non-life-threatening stab wound.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon death-row inmate Gary Haugen is heading back to court tomorrow in his bid to carry out his death sentence. Gov. John Kitzhaber granted Haugen an unwanted reprieve on Nov. 22 two weeks before the twice-convicted murderer was to be executed. The Statesman Journal reports a judge will hear arguments in Haugen’s civil suit. Kitzhaber vowed there would be no executions as long as he was governor.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – In the next three years, about 400 people on the brink of death will be part of a study for which they did not volunteer. In Clackamas and Washington counties, paramedics treating unconscious people in cardiac arrest will administer CPR and then shock with a defibrillator. But if that doesn’t work, a paramedic will administer a syringe of either heart-rhythm medications, or saline solution. The Oregonian reports researchers later will use bar codes on the syringe to see if survival rates differ between them.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Reigning Olympic time trial champion Kristin Armstrong withdrew from the last two days of racing at the Cascade Cycling Classic in central Oregon to prepare for the London Olympics. The Bulletin reports that Armstrong skipped Saturday’s Downtown Twilight Criterium despite leading the five-stage race by more than two minutes after the completion of the first three stages.
