HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A 39-year-old woman has admitted in court that she strangled her 11-year-old daughter in their suburban Portland home in what doctors say was a psychotic break. The Oregonian reports that after Kristina Buckley’s admission yesterday, the judge found Buckley guilty except for insanity. That means she’ll be sent to the state mental hospital and will remain under the supervision of a psychiatric security review board for life.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – Workers removing a tsunami dock from Agate Beach near Newport have managed to cut off the first piece, but they were unable to remove it before dark last night. Officials say it may have been held down by suction from the water-soaked beach. Workers expect they’ll be able to move it today as they cut more pieces from the 66-foot-long dock.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Wildfire experts say states across the West are now at the highest risk of the season for wildfires as hot weather patterns continue to dry out fuels and forests across the region. Their biggest concern in August comes for Northern Rockies states like Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, as well as Great Basin states like Utah, Nevada and Oregon.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters who responded to a Portland apartment fire could hear screaming inside and see smoke seeping from under the door. So they kicked in the door and found – a cat. Fire officials say the cat named Dude – was fine after the firefighters took him outside last night and gave him oxygen. Firefighters say the resident had taken warm clothes from the dryer, put them on a couch near some oily rags and then left the apartment.
