PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters say they’re making headway in a Southern Oregon wild area where restrictions against mechanized equipment have been lifted to allow helicopters and chain saws. There are six small fires in the Red Buttes Wilderness Area along the California-Oregon border. Officials say two are out, crews have containment lines around a third and expect to contain a fourth shortly.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A Grants Pass police officer heard a commotion in her driveway and went outside to find a man trying to steal her pickup truck, which was parked next to her patrol car. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports that Officer Lesley Donaghy yelled at the man and chased him down when he tried to run away Tuesday, holding him at gunpoint until some fellow officers arrived. Joshua M. Schirle was cited for vehicle theft and attempted vehicle theft and released due to lack of jail space.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard has rescued two children and two adults who were reportedly being swept out to sea off a north Oregon beach. Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn says the agency got a call yesterday from a witness who reported the swimmers in distress off Rockaway Beach. Coast Guard rescuers pulled the swimmers into a boat. They were in good condition.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The owners of a nearly century-old ice cream plant plan to shut it down, saying its age and location in downtown Salem make it too difficult and costly to upgrade. Foster Farms Dairy owns the business best known as Deluxe Ice Cream. Spokesman John Segale says the layoffs of about 100 full-time and seasonal workers likely will begin around Oct. 1.
