ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Jesus Montero homered twice off major league ERA leader Jered Weaver, and Jason Vargas outpitched his former Long Beach State teammate to give the Seattle Mariners a 4-1 win yesterday over the Los Angeles Angels. Weaver had won nine straight outings. He fell one shy of Chuck Finley’s 1997 franchise record for consecutive starts won.

SEATTLE (AP) – Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had a rocky return to the Pacific Northwest, throwing a pair of interceptions in his limited appearance, while Seattle rookie Russell Wilson dazzled with touchdowns running and throwing in the second half to help the Seahawks open the preseason with a 27-17 victory Saturday night. Hasselbeck, who was Seattle’s anchor at quarterback for nearly a decade, saw the first play of the game – a pass intended for Nate Washington – get deflected.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Steven Lenhart scored in second-half stoppage time to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders that extended their lead atop the MLS standings Saturday. Lenhart headed home a Shea Salinas corner kick from the top of Seattle’s 6-yard box in the 93rd. The Earthquakes moved four points clear of Sporting Kansas City.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Camilo scored a goal and added an assist to help the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday. The Whitecaps improved to 10-7-7, while avenging a loss to Real Salt Lake in Utah two weeks ago. Salt Lake lost its second straight and fourth straight on the road. Vancouver trails second-place Salt Lake by five points.
