NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – Investigators have determined the fire that destroyed a North Bend church last week was accidental. Assistant Fire Chief Jim Brown told The World the fire was started by a hot light near the altar. It ignited a cloth that was draped nearby. The Aug. 7 fire destroyed the First United Methodist Church.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Residents of about 30 rural homes outside Lakeview have been advised to evacuate as a wildfire continues to spread. Fire spokeswoman Renee Snyder says that some residents have chosen to stay, even as flames came within 100 yard of homes around Drews Reservoir. The fire has burned 48 square miles and has moved south into California.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A judge hears arguments this morning on a move by Terri Horman to delay a lawsuit by her missing boy’s biological mother. Desiree Young’s suit contends that Horman kidnapped then 7-year-old Kryon Horman, who disappeared in 2010. Terri Horman’s lawyers contend the court should delay the suit while a criminal investigation continues.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County medical examiner’s office says a body recovered from the Willamette River near Portland’s Steel Bridge is that of a 43-year-old man last known to be living in northern California. The body found yesterday was identified as Lev Progrebinsky. The sheriff’s office says there was no initial indication of foul play.
