SEATTLE (AP) – Felix Hernandez pitched the Seattle Mariners’ first perfect game and the 23rd in baseball history, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays in a brilliant 1-0 victory yesterday. The Mariners’ ace and former AL Cy Young Award winner has long talked of his desire to achieve pitching perfection. He finally accomplished it against the Rays, striking out the side twice.

TORONTO (AP) – Darlington Nagbe scored in the 82nd to give the Portland Timbers a 2-2 tie with Toronto FC last night. Nagbe headed home a cross from Steven Smith past Milos Kocic to cancel out second-half goals from Toronto strikers Luis Silva and Eric Hassli. Silva gave Toronto FC the lead in the 63rd minute after some great work down the left side from Astone Morgan.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Pete Carroll continues to be very guarded about his grand plan concerning the three-way battle for the starting quarterback position. Carroll has been reluctant during the first three weeks of training camp to divulge information about his QBs. Matt Flynn found out he was starting Saturday’s game against Denver during an interview with a local radio station.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas has hired former Washington and USC defensive coordinator Nick Holt to handle its on-campus recruiting, a job formerly handled by the mistress of ex-coach Bobby Petrino. Coach John L. Smith announced the hire on Wednesday. Holt was the defensive coordinator at Washington from 2009-11 and at Southern California from 2006-08.
