Local Sports – Vikings and Sailors win openers

Prep Football

The prep football season got underway Friday night under the lights with two area teams coming away with a victory.

In Coos Bay, the Siuslaw Vikings jumped to a 28-point lead in the first half and held on for a 28-13 win over the Marshfield Pirates.  Viking Quarterback Jake Thompson completed 13 of 15 passes for 131 yards and carried the ball 14 times for 85 yards and three touchdowns… including a 51-yard scamper for a score midway through the 2nd quarter.

In Mapleton, Brody Ford tossed three touchdown passes; two of them to little brother Tucker as the Sailors cruised to a 50-8 win over Alsea.

The Reedsport Braves fell to Lost River 36-nothing to open their season.

Northwest League Baseball

One final wrap up on the Northwest League baseball season… the Eugene Emeralds missed the playoffs by one game, losing the season finale Friday night 3-1 to the Spokane Indians.  The Emeralds ended the season 47-and-29… a tie for the best record in the Northwest.  But, because they failed to capture the division title in either half of the season will now turn their attentions to off-season activities.

Ducks Show Top Five Prowess

On the college gridiron… number five Oregon romped to a 50-3 halftime lead over Arkansas State; eventually coming away with a 57-34 non-conference win over the Red Wolves at Autzen Stadium.  Oregon State did not play… their scheduled opener against Nicholls State fell victim to Hurricane Isaac.  The Colonels stayed at home in Louisiana to tend to their family and friends.
