SEATTLE (AP) – Jesus Montero hit another home run off Angels ace Jered Weaver, leading Hisashi Iwakuma and the Seattle Mariners past Los Angeles 2-1 yesterday. Carlos Peguero also homered against Weaver, and that was enough for Iwakuma, who pitched 7 1-3 scoreless innings. Montero singled early, then hit his 15th home run of the season in the fourth. He has four homers in nine career at-bats against Weaver.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) – Jackson’ scored in the 32nd minute Kevin Hartmant made a couple of key saves to lift FC Dallas to a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders last night. Dallas preserved its playoff hopes alive, improving to 3-1-1 in its last five to move four points behind Vancouver for the Western Conference’s fifth and final postseason spot. Mauro Rosales scored in the 20th minute for Seattle, which improved to 5-1-2 in its last eight MLS contests and edged past Los Angeles into third place in the West.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Seth Smith hit a two-run homer, Stephen Drew hit a solo shot for his first clout since joining Oakland and the Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 yesterday for their season-best ninth straight win. Brett Anderson won his third straight start since returning from a 14-month absence to recover from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, a big boost for the AL wild-card leading A’s down the stretch after losing Bartolo Colon to a 50-game suspension Aug. 22.

DENVER (AP) – Chris Nelson hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies overcame a career-best six RBIs by Chase Headley to beat the San Diego Padres 11-10 yesterday. Tyler Colvin and Ramon Hernandez also homered and Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs to help the Rockies win two of three to snap the Padres’ string of three consecutive series victories.
