PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Strong winds have increased the size of a wildfire burning near the Central Oregon town of Sisters but are also pushing the flames into the Three Sisters Wilderness and away from populated areas. Fire officials estimated the acreage at nearly 7 square miles, or 4,300 acres, late Monday. About 300 firefighters are battling the Pole Creek Fire.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan made a brief stop in Portland during a Northwest fundraising swing. He held no public events yesterday but spoke to about 200 donors at the Governor Hotel in Portland. He also challenged President Barack Obama to pick a side in a teachers strike in Chicago. Campaign officials declined to say how much money Ryan raised in Portland on Monday, but tickets cost between $1,000 for general admission to $25,000 for a private meal.

RIDDLE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a Riddle man has been arrested after an investigation of the fatal shooting of a bull elk during bow hunting season. Troopers said they got a tip about a rifle shot near Riddle on the opening day in August of bow hunting season for elk and deer in the Douglas County area. Forty-two-year-old Jim Martin was arrested on multiple charges.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Beginning Oct. 14, The Statesman Journal will be printed by The Oregonian. The Portland-based Oregonian will print the Salem newspaper and its related publications under a four-year contract. Statesman Journal Publisher Steve Silberman says his newspaper’s printing press will close, costing up to 25 full-time jobs and about 30 part-time positions.
