FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters in Forest Grove have put out a fire at a Best Western hotel. KATU says hotel guests escaped safely after the fire started outside the building yesterday afternoon. Firefighters say the blaze was caused by a cigarette that was thrown on bark dust. A Forest Grove Fire spokesman says fire sprinklers stopped the fire from entering the attic.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police are investigating the cause of a single vehicle crash that left a man dead west of Grants Pass. The Oregonian reports the accident occurred Sunday morning at Highway 260. According to police, witnesses said the victim’s van crossed the center line, nearly hitting another vehicle head-on, continued off the road and crashed onto a tree.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Corban University officials say a student who had been reported missing since Wednesday has been found safe. Officials told The Statesman Journal 21-year-old Luke Atkinson was found today in Lebanon and never was in danger. Atkinson was reported missing after he was last seen in his dorm room midday Wednesday. He’d been sick with flu-like symptoms.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Nurses and union representatives are asking lawmakers for more help caring for the mentally ill at both the Salem and Portland campuses of the Oregon State Hospital. Hospital staffers tell The Statesman Journal violence at the hospital has reached unacceptable levels. They attribute the problem to having too few staff to take care of the patients.
