PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say one person is dead after a shooting in northeast Portland. Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers found the body last night when they responded to a report of a shooting. Police are investigating. Additional details were not immediately available.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Officials in the law enforcement community opposed to legalizing marijuana are urging Attorney General Eric Holder to speak out before election day against three state ballot initiatives that would do just that. In response, Justice Department spokeswoman Allison Price says the department is not going to speculate on the outcome of the various ballot initiatives in each of the states – Colorado, Washington and Oregon. Federal law prohibits production, possession and sale of pot.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – For the second time in 24 hours, high winds have prompted transportation officials to close the Astoria-Megler bridge near the mouth of the Columbia River. Oregon Transportation Department spokesman Rick Little says winds last night once again threatened to detach segments of contractor work decks attached to the bridge. The National Weather Service says gusts to 40 mph have been reported nearby. Motorists should anticipate a closure that will last into this morning.

REEDSPORT, Ore. (AP) – A tax revolt in the Oregon coastal town Reedsport is spilling into the fall election. In May, voters in the Douglas County town of more than 4,000 people approved a measure that rolls back water and sewer rates and requires a public vote on tax and fee increases. Now, the Roseburg News-Review reports that a slate of candidates who backed the charter amendment is challenging the incumbent mayor and three other City Council candidates.
