PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – For the first time, wind farms plugged into the Bonneville Power Administration network exceeded the output last week of hydroelectric dams in the Northwest. The Oregonian reports it happened early one morning when the BPA had dialed down hydro generation because demand was light. BPA spokesman Doug Johnson said the milestone is a reminder the region still needs a long-term solution to manage an oversupply of power at times from wind and water sources.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The director of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission is retiring seven months after Gov. John Kitzhaber’s office first asked him to step down. Steve Pharo (FEHR’-oh) announced his retirement yesterday .The liquor director reports to a five-member commission, not directly to the governor. A Kitzhaber aide asked Pharo to resign earlier this year and he refused.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A Newport school bus driver is being hailed as a hero for using the Heimlich maneuver to save a student who was choking on a plastic ice cube. Nekko Deutch told KGW that he couldn’t breathe until bus driver Jim McIntyre helped dislodge the cube from his throat. McIntyre says Deutsch could have died, and it’s a reminder to kids not to eat or drink on the school bus.

SHERWOOD, Ore. (AP) – Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue firefighters had to rope down a 75-foot ravine to rescue a driver who had crashed off a road yesterday afternoon in Sherwood. The 71-year-old Tigard man was flown to a hospital and is expected to recover. The Washington County sheriff’s office says the crash also took out a power pole.
