SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon students taking part in a mock election chose Barack Obama over Mitt Romney 62 percent to 32 percent in the race for president. Results released today by the League of Women Voters of Oregon show students favored Ballot Measure 80 for marijuana legalization 52 percent to 48 percent. Students said the economy was the most important national issue, followed by education.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A 44-year-old Bethany man who admitted sexually abusing a girl has been sentenced in Hillsboro to 30 years in prison. Stephen Webb pleaded guilty to sex abuse charges in a plea deal. The Oregonian reports the case began in July when a neighbor called police to report disturbing cries coming from Webb’s home. Investigators believe a 14-year-old girl had been abused over two years.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland architect Ben Kaiser has proposed a way to protect school children from earthquakes and save school districts money. Kaiser says steel cages could be installed in schools to create safe zones where children would rush as a quake begins. The quake cages would cost about one-fourth as much as a seismic upgrade to a building.

TRAIL, Ore. (AP) – Two southern Oregon deer hunters who shot a bear got a violent surprise when the wounded bear roused itself and attacked one of them. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies say the injured animal grabbed a Medford man in a “bear hug” yesterday and the two rolled down a 50-foot embankment with the bear biting the man. The second hunter was eventually able to shoot the bear in the head, killing it. Deputies say the hunters had a tag that allowed them to shoot the bear legally.
