The Siuslaw Boys Cross Country team claimed their second straight state championship Saturday in Eugene, and did something that hasn’t happened since 1965.  Matthew Campbell became the first Viking to win the boys’ individual title since Siuslaw Hall of Famer Steve Savage did it 47 years ago.  Campbell edged out teammate Mitchell Butler for the first spot though both were officially awarded the same time… 15:49.  Mack Marbas was fifth; Hayden Schaffner 9th and Brian Schofield was 17th.

Viking Blue and Gold was on the individual girls winner as well.  Katy Potter was eight seconds ahead of Hidden Valley’s Sierra Brown with a time of 18:56.  The Viking girls were fifth overall as a team behind La Salle, Klamath Union, Molalla and Scappoose.

Volleyball

The Siuslaw volleyball season came to an end in the second round of the OSAA 4A playoffs Saturday at home.  The Vikings fell in four games to the Madras White Buffalo.  Lona Dengler had 9 kills; Lacey DeSantis had nine digs and three aces for the Vikings who ended the season as Far West League Champions.

The Reedsport Braves advance to the 2A state finals in Redmond this weekend.  They downed Knappa in three games Saturday afternoon in Reedsport.  The Braves will take on Weston-McEwen at 3:15 Friday afternoon to open the tourney at Ridgeview High School.

Prep Football

On the gridiron… Jake Thompson made sure there was no question about who was in charge Friday night as he carried the ball 20 times for 125 yards and scored the first three touchdowns for the Vikings in a 39-6 win over Ridgeview High School to advance to the opening round this week of the 4A playoffs.  Thompson connected on 9 of 15 passes for 119 yards and one scoring pass, on a 23-yard fade route to Sam Johnson late in the second quarter to push the score to 33-6.  Siuslaw will take on number two seed La Salle Prep Friday night in Milwaukie.

Reedsport and Mapleton closed out their regular football seasons Friday night.  The Braves fell to Coquille 52-nothing; the Sailors lost to Crow 64-24.

College Football

The Oregon Ducks completed a couple of “never befores’ Saturday evening in Los Angeles during their 62-51 win over the USC Trojans… 62 points are the most ever scored on the Trojans in the 124 years… and the Ducks’ 730 yards of total offense are the most-ever against USC as well.  The Ducks moved up a notch, past Notre Dame, to number three in the BCS rankings.

Oregon State held steady at number 11 in the BCS, but things were anything but steady early in their 36-26 comeback win over Arizona State Saturday night in Corvallis.
