PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Republicans have a chance to snap a two-decade losing streak for Oregon statewide offices and take control of the state House as last-minute voters return their ballots before today’s 8 p.m. deadline. Oregon is not a battleground in the presidential race, there’s no election for governor or U.S. senator on the ballot and the five congressional incumbents are favored to retain their seats. But Republican Knute Buehler issued a strong challenge to Democrat Kate Brown in the race for secretary of state and the parties are vying for control of the state House after two years of a 30-30 split.

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a trooper who stopped a pickup truck for a speeding violation in central Oregon found about 56 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle. Lt. Gregg Hastings says the marijuana and oxycodone tablets recovered Sunday have a combined street value of about $43,000. John Stonebarger of Fall River Mills, Calif., was arrested for investigation of unlawful possession, distribution and manufacture of a controlled substance.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 23-year-old Portland woman has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for killing a pedestrian and then enlisting the help of five other people in a two-month cover-up. The Oregonian reports that Ashley Chavez pleaded guilty yesterday to manslaughter, drunken driving and hit-and-run driving. In March, she was driving a Honda in west Portland that killed 63-year-old Nancy Schoeffler.

AURORA, Ore. (AP) – State police say a man being sought in a domestic assault case was struck and killed while walking in traffic on Interstate 5. Police say the man’s wife had called for help after leaving her husband at a rest area south of Wilsonville Sunday night. The man was identified as 48-year-old Troy Duane Tribby of Ashland.
